The Grove was built in 1895 by prominent South Carolinian, Mr. W. J. Montgomery. The house thrived during the late Victorian era and the Edwardian period. This period of history is familiar in popular culture these days, particularly to fans of the Oscar Winning movie, The King’s Speech as King Edward VII continued to rule the British Empire at the beginning of the movie. Other popular portrayals of this period include Masterpiece Theater’s Downton Abbey and Upstairs, Downstairs. These programs as well as documentaries featuring this period of history are available in The Grove’s media library for use during your stay. You may enjoy other aspects of the culture of this period:  

• Composers included Claude Debussy, Antonin Dvorak, Edward Elgar, and Ralph Vaughn Williams.

• British authors G. K. Chesterton, Rudyard Kipling, Beatrix Potter, George Bernard Shaw, and Edith Wharton were entertaining their readers. In the United States, Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote The Secret Garden.
